meeting of intellectuals was held on 11/07/2007 at Sri Lanka
Foundation Institute to educate artistes and literary Scholars
about the new national front to be formed by the J.V.P. J.V.P
leader Comrade Somawansa Amarasinghe, Propaganda secretary
comrade Wimal Weerawansa and Comrade Vijitha Herath represented
the J.V.P. and many artistes and literary men were present at
this meeting.
Comrade Somawansa Amarasinghe
made the keynote address at this meeting. He,
explaining the necessity for the formation of the new national
front, said that the country has been plunged in to an anarchic
situation unprecedented in Sri Lankan history.
He pointed out that the country is experiencing
tremendous deterioration in economic, political and cultural
spheres and unemployment, poverty, corruption and terror are on
the increase and farmers, students and workers as well as
businessmen have become extremely helpless. He said that this
national front was formed with the intention of saving the
country from this crisis and to take the country on the correct
path. Comrade Amarasinghe said that the country is burdened with
debt that can never be paid off. Now the country is steered
according to the agenda of the World Bank and the IMF, and if
this situation goes on the country becoming a colony of the
imperialists is unavoidable.
The J.V.P is a party that has come out throughout
the history to save the country whenever it is in crisis. We are
as well getting prepared to face challenges knowing in advance
the destiny the country is heading towards.
He said that it is the duty of the artistes to
educate the people about the destiny the country has befallen
and build a strong public opinion to unite forces that can build
the country.
In further comments comrade Amarasinghe said that
the regimes that governed the country from 1948 have admitted
that their economic systems are no more valid to this country.
The world today are proceeding on a new path. Many countries in
the World are rejecting the World Bank and the IMF. That is the
reality we see in Latin American countries.
Therefore the country needs a leadership that can
change the old path the country so far proceeded and take the
country on a new road. So many are examples of such leadership
in the world.
This is a country that can be developed. Security
forces have proved this when they rescued the Eastern province
from the Tigers. He said the contribution the artistes can make
in this exercise is immense. He invited the artistes to rally
round their leadership of the new national front.
