A campaign demanding that farmers' issue should
be solved organized by the Socialist Farmer s' Union of the JVP
was held in Dambulla town yesterday (24th).
A demonstration that started
from Gam Udawa grounds at Dambulla marched to Dambulla town and
held a protest campaign demanding the government to stop
slashing fertilizer subsidy, bring down cost of living and solve
farmers' issues. Later a rally was held near the economic centre
at Damulla.
Comrade Lal Kanthe
addressing the rally said, "The government that has become one
of the most corrupted and inefficient administrations that ruled
the country has ignored increasing the salaries of working
people. The fertilizer subsidy given to the farmer community has
been slashed and they have been made destitute. However the
government maintains a colossal cabinet. The ministers of this
government have become peons who have no work."
He said the progressive and
patriotic people in the country would be rallied and steps would
be taken to send the government home if steps are not taken to
make available the fertilizer subsidy and solve issues of the
farmer community.
Members of many farmer
associations including United Farmers' Union of Nuwarakalaviya,
United Farmer's Union of Athugalpura, Farmers'' Foundation of
Thamankaduwa and United Farmers' Union of Gangathalawa
participated in the campaign. JVP Parliamentarians Comrades Lal
Kanthe, S.K. Subasinghe, Ranaweera Pathirana, Jayanthe
Wijesekera, Namal Karunaratne and Sujatha Alahakone too
