Acts of violence against JVP
supporters and candidates for the provincial council election in
the East have by now been intensified.
JVP supporters who were
engaged in election propaganda in Thirukkovil area came to be
the target of a marauding attack at 3.30 pm yesterday (05) from
an armed gang of pilleyan group contesting the election with the
government. They badly attacked Mr. R. Wijayasundaram with clubs
and bicycle chains saying that only Pilleyan can engage in
election campaign in Tamil areas. It has been clearly visible
that attackers from Pilleyan group had pistols in their hands
and weapons in the three wheelers they came in on last 3rd alone
three election offices in Trincomalee district have been
attacked Morawewa JVP election office attacked by the UPFA
supporters at 2.30 am on the last 1st is located between two
police posts. JVP election campaign had obstructions largely
from certain biased government officials.
Several incidents of attacks
death threats and removal by force of propaganda material and

reported from Ampara district from the inception of the election
campaign. JVP campaigning among the Muslims has been a phobia in
particular to the Muslim Congress supporters contesting on the
UNP ticket. Therefore JVP supporters engaged in propaganda
campaign around Nintavur and Akkarapathu mosques have had to
face threats and obstructions all the time.
Pilleyan group beaning arms
in Batticaloa District has given rise to a different situation.
JVP election propaganda office in Eravur has been attacked and
propaganda activities of Batticaloa JVP group leader Mr. Mohomad
Ibrahim have been obstructed. In one such instance the things
have come in a cab belonging to Road Development Authority.
However amidst all these
obstructions, attacks, threats JVP has been successfully
campaigning for the election. JVP has been able to establish
well among the Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil people in the East in
their struggle against communalism and separatism and develop
broad political relationships with the people who were not
reachable due to war situation that hitherto prevailed.
