JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake replies to JVP dissident
Wimal Weerawansa - who accused Dissanayake indirectly as
being the chief conspirator in the plot to oust him from
the party...
Q: Your party is in a crisis after eleven MPs left the
party recently. What is the position of your party now?
A: We have not yet decided to take disciplinary action
against 10 MPs who joined hands with comrade Wimal
Weerawansa. However, charges are before the party’s
Central Committee (CC) about the issues of trust,
conduct and political loyalty of Weerawansa.
Q: Weerawansa says that he had answered all the charges
at the February 26th CC meeting. Why are you still
insisting that he comes before the CC?
A: No, he did not respond to all the charges.
Q: Is he lying?
A: The CC decided to probe into all the allegations and
allowed him to function in all the posts he holds until
the inquiry is over.
Q: What are the main charges against him?
A: I cannot divulge them, as they are charges. But, the
main issues were regarding trust, his political
behaviour and conduct. If he wants us to divulge those
charges we can release them to the public.
Q: He said there was a conspiracy to oust him from the
party. What is the truth?
A: There was no conspiracy at all. This party was
built-up by ordinary people and we take collective
decisions. Members can’t operate individually. But he is
trying to define disciplinary charges as a conspiracy.
Q: Didn’t he tell the CC to either clear him or charge
him without delay?
A: He is trying to distort the truth. When he was
absconding the CC summons, comrade Tilvin Silva,
Lalkantha and Chandrasena Wijesinghe met him and
requested him to appear before the CC to clear himself.
But he did not oblige. While the disciplinary process
was going on, he took the issue out of the party to
Parliament.
Q: Weerawansa said there are three conspirators in the
party and if the party can chase them out all of them
can rejoin the party. What is your response?
A: He can expose those three conspirators to the CC. He
did not talk about a conspiracy while he was in the
party. First he said there is one conspirator. Then it
increased to two....now three. His number can further go
up in the future.
Q: But indirectly he pointed fingers at you.
A: Yes, he does not have the guts to directly name me
because it is a diabolical lie. Do you think that the
JVP will keep anyone who conspired with Ranil or Ravi
Karunanayake? Even the JVP will not keep anyone who has
secret deals with Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Basil
Rajapaksa. He should table solid evidence before the CC
against the member who has deals with the UNP. Normally
Wimal was a man who expressed ideas fearlessly. This
proves that he has nothing to disprove.
Q:He said that you proposed at the CC meeting to
nominate a JVP Presidential candidate in 2005 without
supporting Mahinda Rajapaksa That shows you had a deal
with the UNP?
A: Do you think that the JVP will keep me if I had any
deals with the UNP. He has either forgotten the past or
is purposely trying to distort the truth. I voted at the
CC meeting to the proposal that “the JVP should support
Mahinda Rajapaksa but should not join his Government”.
Why did only he get out of the party if that is the
problem? There were so many members who supported that
proposal. His real problem is that he can’t face the CC
to answer the charges.
Q: Did you have any discussion with Ravi Karunanayake or
visit his house?
A: Not at all.
Q: Do you challenge him (Wimal) to prove it?
A: Yes, I challenge him. He even can’t directly name the
conspirator. That shows he is lying.
Q: Certain political deals by many parties cannot be
proved. But they had taken place in Sri Lankan political
history. Do we know whether he is having that problem?
A: Do you think that the JVP will keep anyone who has
dealings with the UNP. All our work is monitored by the
party.
Q: Do you say that he had a different agenda?
A: That is proved from his speech at the Dalada
Maligawa. There was a conspiracy and it has exposed him
now. People will judge who the conspirator is.
Q: We have seen the JVP as a disciplined party. But now
it has become highly undisciplined as the JVP is
attacking its political opponents.
A: We are a disciplined party.
Q: Then kindly explain why you are slinging mud at your
political opponents and attacking them physically?
A: We have not slung mud or manhandled political
opponents. But our name is implicated in all these
incidents. Do you think that we are fools to carry out
attacks on our political opponents as it could benefit
them? We had no involvement in attacking Doctor Sumith
Wanniarchchi and Bandaragama PNM organiser Hemantha
Perera.
Q: In that case who attacked the driver of MP Samansiri
Herath who joined hands with Weerawansa?
A: Nobody knew who Samansiri Herath was earlier. It was
the members of the party that brought Herath to this
position. The trouser and the shirt he is wearing today
have been bought by the party. His defection might have
hurt the members. That is the background to the
incident. But that incident should never have happened.
However, our Secretary Tilvin Silva had asked the IGP to
probe into all the incidents in order to have our names
cleared.
Q: How can people trust you? You have attacked the
driver and yet deny all other attacks?
A: Who will benefit from those attacks? Do you think the
JVP will commit such acts in order to give political
mileage to other parties? That is why we asked the IGP
to probe into all these attacks.
Q: Weerawansa says that he could not make the speech
about the eviction of Tamils in lodges as he had to
participate at a press conference. He was asked to make
another speech on the Sunday Leader incident — after a
week from the incident. What is the truth?
A: Do you think that he had participated in all the PNM
press conferences? At least he could have informed the
party about the press conference and then taken a
decision without ignoring it.
Q: Did the Party prevent him from taking legal action
against newspapers which tried to defame him?
A: He can go to courts now. Why is he not going to
courts now? Because, he can’t. That is why the party
also did not go to courts. His heart knows why he can’t
take legal action.
Q: The PNM is now under the control of Wimal Weerawansa.
Will you lose the PNM which was set up by you?
A: I don’t think that someone can hijack it. Many
members are now discussing as to why the JVP problems
were brought to the PNM. These members will take the
right decision at the right time.
Q: Weerawansa was the hatchet that was used to attack
people on behalf of your party. Do you think his
defection is a great loss?
A: He has the ability to carry the party’s messages to
the people. But before he gets on stage, hundreds of
party men strive to make arrangements. Don’t forget
that.
Q: What is your position at the next Provincial Council
Election in the East?
A: Our main man Jayantha Wijesekara was arrested on
false charges and bailed out recently. His security has
been withdrawn now. In addition his back-up vehicle was
also withdrawn. Remember he is the one to put down the
Eelam flag and hoist the Lion Flag in Trincomalee.
He is a popular figure there. Hakeem is the only
political leader who signed a deal with Prabhakaran.
Pillayan is trying to rule the East with guns. India
owns many properties in the East and wants to install a
puppet leader who will look after their interests.
Q: Who is that puppet leader?
A: Pillayan.
