Socialism, the noble expectation of all downtrodden masses would be achieved with many other victories on the way says the Leader of the JVP Comrade Somawansa Amarasinghe. He said this addressing the massive May Day rally held at BRC grounds on the 1st.
He said, Today we commemorate a historic May Day. The conspiracy launched internally and from outside has been defeated by us all. When we commemorated May Day last year many comrades in our party did not know there was a conspiracy being hatched against our party. We are commemorating this May Day after the conspiracy was exposed and it was defeated. Imperialism is breathing its last breaths. It acts ruthlessly for its survival. As such, conspiracies against us are not over. For, Socialism goes forward together with counter-revolution.
Last year there were African representatives on our stage. This year we have representatives from India. Next year representatives of Latin America and Europe would join us to bring international solidarity. When defeating imperialism the whole world will clasp hands. We all know that it is the USA that gives leadership to imperialism. However, we should remember that the masses of the USA and the imperialist government are not one. Countries like the UK and France have joined the USA to strengthen imperialism. There is another country in this circle that we should not forget. It is Australia that is hiding behind but carries out what’s bid by imperialism. It is possible that the conspiracy against building socialism in our country could come from the USA and UK via Australia. We are prepared to confront all imperialist forces. However, we need the support of the masses to defeat these conspiracies. The masses who toiled day and night to defeat the conspiracy against our party have assembled here today. Our party has always had the support and dedication of the downtrodden masses. Downtrodden masses in this country will always protect the political party Comrade Rohana Wijeweera founded. In return the JVP protects the noble expectation of all downtrodden masses which is Socialism. We would victoriously march for Socialism.
We have big issues to solve. We all together could overcome those challenges. I embrace you all for the strength and determination you have shown to carry on the struggle to defeat imperialism and capitalism. We are prepared to make the supreme sacrifice if it is the only thing left to liberate our people. We pledge that we would defend noble expectation of the downtrodden masses with our lives. Our party has the capability of defeating local and international conspiracies. There is no force that could defeat our party nor will there ever be.
There is one thing that we should remind to the gentlemen of the police force. It is true that those gentlemen carry out baton charges, tear gas and water cannon attacks against us. However, these gentlemen who have to follow orders from above are but people from our class. Capitalism can never solve their issues either. Please remember that. It is necessary to get their support for the mass struggles that would crop up.
Today protest rallies are held in more than 950 cities around the world. Sri Lanka too joins this movement. Today the struggle against imperialism cannot be done in isolation. It should be a united struggle. Imperialism is in a rage due to this struggle. Struggles have commenced throughout Europe. We extend our solidarity to all those who engage in these struggles. The economy has broken down throughout the world. Why should imperialism that makes masses suffer allowed to exist? It should be definitely defeated.
There is another matter that people in our country should know. Ranil Wickremesinghe cannot do anything better than Mahinda Rajapaksa. Both of them could only kneel before imperialism. Despite Mahinda Rajapaksa talking about a national economy, there is no such thing in the country. The rupee continuously depreciates. Dollars are pumped to save the rupee. This makes a dollar shortage, foreign reserves dry up. This is how the economic crisis exists throughout the world. Obama couldn’t save the economy in his country. How could Mahinda Rajapaksa or Ranil Wickremesinghe do what Obama couldn’t?
There are serious issues for the working masses. The workers in Chicago struggled for an eight hour working day. Today imperialism carries out a sixteen hour working day. This could come to Sri Lanka as well. We should be prepared for a final struggle against this. The artistes, journalists, intellectuals, farmers, youths, students, fisher-folk humanitarians, environmentalists too have a responsibility of joining this struggle. We call upon all to come forward to build the broadest anti-imperialist front. There is no other solution.
