“We are now not concerned with the 70 years of rotating politics. It has been proved that that kind of politics cannot take our country forward by even an inch. Hence, it should be changed,” said the General Secretary of the JVP Comrade Tilvin Silva yesterday (24th).
He was addressing the Badulla District summit of the series of summits being held by the JVP throughout the island under the theme ‘“Gamata Diriyak – Ratata Balayak” (Boost for the Village & Power for the Country). Comrade Tilvin Silva participated as the chief guest and a large crowd including the Leader of the JVP for Badulla District Comrade Samantha Vidyarathna were present.
Speaking further Comrade Tilvin Silva said, “Today our country had deteriorated economically. It has become a country that feeds itself by getting stuck in a debt trap. The politics in our country has degenerated. The politician has become a crook. It is a shame to talk about them. The society has deteriorated. Thieving, fraud, thuggery, rape of women and crime have increased. People have come down to the low level of garlanding thieves. Even religious sector that should guide the masses has deteriorated. This is why priests go and tie ‘pirith’ thread on Mr. Ravi Karunanayaka when he had to relinquish his portfolio as he was caught taking a house as a bribe to assist thieving and had to go home. This is why some Bhikkus have been made to go on alms-gathering to pay the fine of thieves who were imprisoned for distributing ‘Sil’ clothes and incurred a loss of Rs.600 million to the government. As such, everything – the economy, politics, society and the people have deteriorated. We live in an era where everything pure has been fouled up. There is no way beyond it.
Our country is moving towards barbarism. This has to be changed. We have no right to hand down such a country to our children. This is why we say changing this country now is compulsory and we have got the opportunity to do so. This is why it is necessary to rally the masses. This is why the JVP is tirelessly working towards such a goal. We are holding summits of the ‘Dhiriya’ societies to build a mighty power to change the politics in this country at the first instance we get.
We are now not concerned with the 70 years of rotating politics. It has been proved that that kind of politics cannot take our country forward by even an inch. Hence, it should be changed.
However, we know changing it is not a simple task. It is true that it is a difficult task. It is because our people are a little traditional. It is so in our country as well as in other countries in the world. The change comes very slowly. Our society is very superstitious. Capitalist governments, the capitalist class and capitalist media have filled our people’s minds with superstition. American writer Mark Twain once said, “It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.” This is true. This is what we are trying to do. We, of the JVP, attempt to tell the people that they have been fooled and to save them from being fooled. It is a bit difficult. What is easy is to fool the people. If we too fooled the people we could have become prime ministers and ministers. Who does the fooling? Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is one of them. Ranil is another. What does the incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena do? He too deceives the people. Those around them too deceive masses. The media that help them too deceive the masses. Those Buddhist priests who tie ‘Pirith’ thread to them too deceive masses.”
