The agitation organized by Lanka Teacher Services Union (LTSU) opposite the Ministry of Education today (28th) morning was attacked by Police riot squads with water cannon.
The agitation was held to demand solutions for anomalies in teachers’ and principals’ salaries that have existed for the last 22 years and demanding a 30 months arrears that have not been paid yet.
The government had deployed police riot squad to attack the teachers and principals with water mixed with chemicals. Several teachers were injured. The JVP has issued a statement condemning the barbaric attack on teachers and principals.
Condemn barbaric attack targeted by the government on teachers!
The government deployed police to attack with water cannon teachers who engaged in a peaceful agitation opposite the Ministry of Education today (28th). Several teachers have been injured as a result of the police attack and a teacher who was seriously injured has been hospitalized. We condemn the ghastly act of deploying police to attack with chemicals mixed water the teachers who were engaged in a peaceful agitation for their just rights and injuring several of them.
The government, by responding barbarically instead of solving the grievances of the teachers who teach the children of our land, has displayed its vulgarity. Especially, such response of the government that came to power putting forward ‘good governance’ slogans should draw close attention of the masses. The teachers have arrived at the Ministry of Education that is relevant to them to get solutions for their unsolved issues but not to get attacked by water cannon. However, the reason why the government has to rely on this type of ‘solution’ even after four years of its rule could be because it’s the only solution they have for issues of the people. The government may have attempted to hint at how it is going to respond to the working masses. Whatever it is, it would be important for the government to expect the people in the country including the working masses to respond against its detestable moves.
As such, we condemn the barbaric attack on the teachers and emphasize that the entire working masses should rise up against the cowardly responses of the government.
