“The blood and tears that ran to the ground on the 21st need not be replaced by blood and tears of a different kind. All bloodshed should be stopped. As such, we ask the people not to get caught in communal snares. Don’t get a kick from communal clashes. For, the result of such ‘kicks’ would be very fatal. As the JVP we appeal to the people, whatever community they belong to, whatever religion they practice and whatever language they speak, not to take measures to sustain communalism. Do not prepare fertile soil for communalism through communal clashes. Do not contribute to making suicide bombers in the country. The JVP would take every move to prevent communal clashes in the country,” says the General Secretary of the JVP Comrade Tilvin Silva addressing a press conference held at the head office of the JVP yesterday (14th). The Member of the Central Committee of the JVP Comrade Dr Nalind Jayatissa MP too was present.
Speaking further Comrade Tilvin Silva said, “Our country has not been able to break loose of the atmosphere created after the carnage on the 21st of last month despite three weeks have gone by. After the attacks on that day the country has fallen to a very dangerous situation. The people live in fear, suspicion and are ill at ease. What should be done now is to take measures to ease up fear and suspicion, bring normalcy to the country and totally defeat the Islamist extremists. The security forces in our country intervened to suppress the Islamist extremist terrorist group. Extremists were arrested. Various weapons they possessed were seized. Their machinery was weakened. Also, the general public, without getting stirred up, supported the security forces. This was how the past three weeks moved on. Everyone wanted to bring the lives of the people to normalcy.
In such an atmosphere, uneasiness has been created in the country during the last few days. Several communal clashes have been reported from Kurunegala, Chilaw and Gampaha. After the very harmful extremist attacks on the 21st which caused anguish for the whole nation and attempts were being made to pacify the affected, another group of extremists are creating clashes that hinder such moves.
During the past, certain Sinhalese, as well as Muslim leaders, sustained communalism. Those who hope to come to power next and those who dreamt of becoming the President supported communalism. According to what has been revealed now Mr Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, while he was the Defense Secretary, has given money to extremists and communalists from the same account. Their aim is to terrorize the masses and use this terror for their petty political goals. A small communalist, extremist group that carries out moves to fulfil their agendas are creating clashes. As a result of such clashes, the extremism that should be suppressed gets an opportunity to raise its head. An opportunity is created for Islamist extremist terrorists to justify their moves.
The communal clashes are not beneficial to the people. It brings destruction to the whole society. The security forces are continuing their operations to suppress the extremist group involved in the attacks. When communal clashes are created at such a time the attention of security forces have to be drawn towards such clashes and the security forces lose the opportunity to concentrate on the lunatic Islamist extremist terrorist group. As such, the communal clashes that are created in the country now would be beneficial to the likes of extremists. Our country has to confront such a situation due to the non-existence of National unity; as the country is suffering from the disease of communalism. At the terrorist attack on the 21st, we lost nearly 300 lives. However, a large number of lives were lost in the clashes created against the Tamil people in 1983. The ‘black july’ of 1983 was a reason for the creation of Tamil extremist terrorism. The July incidents helped those terrorists to get international support. Due to this terrorism, the people in our country had to go through a very pathetic period. It was a tragedy. The general public had to compensate with thousands of lives. Opportunist groups creating communal clashes ten years after ending such a terrorist war would drag the country and the people towards another severe conflict.
The whole Muslim community need not be responsible for the attacks on the 21st. The extremists involved in the attacks belong to a small group. Legal action should be taken against those politicians and others who supported them. All Muslims should not be pushed towards extremism by treating them maliciously. Do we have to make more Zaharans from Muslim society? Do we need to create more suicide bombers? What the general public should do is to give their maximum contribution to building National unity. People should intervene to halt communal clashes.
At present various statements are being made that there is an international intervention in our country. Imperialists conspire to find an opportunity to intervene in our country. Any harm to people’s lives or assets due to communal clashes would give imperialists an opportunity to interfere in our country. Do we have to invite this danger? Do we need UNHRC interventions in our country again? Does the country have to get a black mark due to groups of people that paint themselves with patriotism and nationalism but lack real patriotism and love for the Nation but intend plunder and a craze for arson and slaughter? Why do they take steps to create terror, suspicion and uncertainty among people instead of pacifying and building unity among them? Recently, many within the media took measures to create uncertainty and disunity among the masses. Also, due to half decisions taken by the government, the suspicion people had against other communities widened. Rumours were allowed to run riot in the country as the government did not act in a responsible manner.
The government did not implement the law properly. What should be done is to implement and enforce the law without considering the status, race, creed or any other difference of the wrongdoer. As the government did not implement the laws certain groups attempt to take the laws into their hands. Punishing perpetrators should not be brought down to the low level of protecting the political power of the government.
Also, the government should tell people the truth. For, some groups consist of mentally retarded individuals. They ‘create’ news. Also, certain communalists create news to enrage masses. Certain politicians create fake news to fulfil their petty political agendas. Certain media publish various news items to suit their political projects. Banning social media would not stop creating false news. The government should make available genuine, correct news to the people. It is because the government did not fulfil its responsibility correctly that clashes sprung up after three weeks when the situation should have become normal. Also, there is a group that needs communal clashes so that they could fulfil their political goals; to show that the country is anarchic. Those who hope to come to power next would want communal clashes to take place.
Now, a dialogue has commenced regarding National security and public security. As a Nation what is more important is the public security. At the moment, as a Nation, what is important is the public security. For, public security is important for school children to go to schools, people to go by bus and train and for their work. As public security has not been established in the country yet children don’t go to school and people are reluctant to use buses and trains. As such, National security, as well as public security, should be confirmed in the country. Without building national unity national security or public security cannot be assured. It is difficult to have public security in a country where there are clashes. If there is no unity among the people, if they collect arms to attack each other there cannot be public security in such a country. The small cliques that create communal riots and political group that give leadership to such cliques cannot understand this fact.
The people in our country are still live in fear. The people want to live normal lives without fear, suspicion and uncertainty. The unity among Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher and Malay peoples could be built only by building National unity. The JVP, as a party, always believed in National unity. Hence, we would not allow National unity to be destroyed. Our country doesn’t need any more black marks, humiliation or communal bloodsheds. We, as the JVP, call upon all political parties to tell the country their standpoint. We have already explained our standpoint to our members. Recently, we met our members and had discussions with them regarding these matters. If all party leaders could explain their standpoint to their members most of these conflicts can be avoided. However, certain leaders of political parties speak about national unity on the surface but from underneath they arouse communalism. The blood and tears that ran to the ground on the 21st need not be replaced by blood and tears of a different kind. The JVP would take every move to prevent communal clashes in the country.
We have decided to carry out a massive ‘Sathyagraha’ action near Viharamahadevi Park on the 16th at 4.00 p.m. with the participation of all forces against extremism and communalism. Also, we would commence a massive dialogue with the people regarding this matter. We would make the people aware of having seminars throughout the island. We would try to convince people that national security and public security could be confirmed only by building national unity. At the moment the normal lives of the people have been completely broken down. The people have been burdened with more and more taxes. People have to struggle hard for their living. They, instead of solving their means of daily living, have to solve the question of security and protect their lives. The struggle to increase their salaries has been abandoned. They are unable to go to their workplaces; children do not go to schools. The people have no time for entertainment, to go to a film show. As such, we ask all people in this country to rally to defeat extremist, communal moves.”
