The government is making an attempt to invest money from EPF in the share market as a solution for the economic crisis that has intensified after the 21st attack. Already, the government has used Rs.90 billion from the EPF in the share market. However, it is revealed that the value of the shares has come down to Rs.74 billion incurring a loss of Rs.16 billion. Dumping the money from EPF belonging to 70 million workers, when there is an unreliable economy in the country, would severely harm the fund says the Information Secretary of the JVP Comrade Vijitha Herath.
Comrade Vijitha Herath said this at a press conference held at the head office of the JVP on the 9th.
He said, “After the suicide bomb attacks on the 21st the economy of the country is in a serious crisis. The lives of the masses are confronted with several issues. The tourism industry in the country has severely broken down. There aren’t any tourists in hotels at present. All those who were involved in professions related to the tourist industry are finding it to make the ends meet. Some hotels have been closed. Some have given their employees leave. How could they maintain their lives? There is no mediation by the government regarding people or businessmen who are distressed due to the Easter Sunday incident. The government has announced certain relief to tourist hotels. However, those who involved in indirect jobs in the sector or small scale businessmen who depend on tourism don’t get any relief from the government. As such, the government should pay attention to this and take measures.
There is an attempt by the government to invest money from EPF in the share market as a solution to the economic crisis. Already, the government has used Rs.90 billion from the EPF in the share market. However, it is revealed that the value of the shares has come down to Rs.74 billion incurring a loss of Rs.16 billion. Dumping the money from EPF belonging to 70 million workers, when there is an unreliable economy in the country, would severely harm the fund. We emphasize to the government not to invest money from the EPF in the share market when the economy in the country is unstable. Also, temporary short cut solutions cannot find answers to the crisis.
The Easter Sunday attacks had an effect on the economy of the country. However, the wrong economic policies followed by the government too had trapped the country in an economic snare. The country has got bankrupt. The economic growth has come down to 3.2. The government cannot put this on the attacks on the 21st. The people not only are trapped in an economic hardship but they also are subdued by terror and suspicion. The government cannot at least open the schools in the country after the attacks. Poor attendance in schools shows the step taken by the government was a total failure. It shows that security is not stable for school children to attend school. Also, the government has failed to bring normalcy to the lives of ordinary people. As such the government, shouldering their responsibility should take immediate measures to prevent errors and bring normalcy to the lives of the general public.
Also, certain political groups attempt to use the attack to conceal their political bankruptcy. They come out with hate speech blatantly to spread communalism. They sustain opposed extremism against the extremist terror attack. This issue cannot be solved by sustaining one extremism against another extremism. Extremism cannot be defeated by extremism. National security can be affirmed only by establishing national unity. However, the government, instead of establishing national unity gives an opportunity for certain groups to sow communalism.
At this moment, as the JVP, we hope to launch a special operation to ease off the terror, suspicion and mistrust the people suffer from. We would begin making the party members aware and get them to take part in the task of public security. Also, we would take all measures to mediate in all steps taken on behalf of national unity. We have organized a series of awareness programmes under the theme “Our task to defeat extremism, build national unity and affirm public security”. The programme will be launched on the 10th of May. The awareness seminars will be held at Matara by Comrade Tilvin Silva and at Kalutara by Comrade Anura Dissanayake on the 10th. On the 11th seminars will be held in Colombo, Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Ratnapura districts. It will be held in other districts on 12, 14, 16, 19 and 20th. We would like to emphasize to the people that we would take, as a party, all measures to end the instability in the country.”
