JVP condemns US backed coup in Bolivia

November 12, 2019 Nihal Weerasuriya

JVP issued a statement condemning the coup backed by the USA in Bolivia. Bolivian President Evo Morales has been forced to resign.

Full text of teh statement:

Bolivian President Evo Morales has resigned after politicians, the army and police chiefs urged him to quit as elements instigated by the opposition that is backed by US imperialism created chaos in the country also attacking Morales’ supporters and torching their homes.

Despite Morales receiving slightly more than the 10-percentage-point lead over his opponent to be declared winner at the election, the opposition backed by US imperialism took to the streets attacking Morales’ allies and holding anti-government protests.

Morales, the region’s longest-standing president and the first indigenous leader gave a voice to millions of poor people in the poorest country in the region. He succeeded in making a deeply unequal society more inclusive and worked hard to give the country a respectable economic growth. He was also a towering figure for the region’s left-wing movements.

The irregularities said to have been committed during the election that triggered weeks of violent clashes, intervention from the armed forces, resignation by certain police officers, especially those who were manning security at Morales’ residence seem to be a part of a coup which is a part of a bigger, sinister agenda of eradicating left and progressive politics from Latin-American region.

The involvement of Organization of American States (OAS) in monitoring the election, later stating there were irregularities and urging Morales to resign is definitely a part of the conspiracy to engineer a coup.   Meanwhile, the conduct of the Right-leaning governments in Latin America such as Colombia, Peru and Brazil calling on the Bolivian state to ensure new elections and also welcoming Morales’ fall indicate the sinister process carried out to undermine the lawfully elected left leaning governments in the region.

Progressive and left forces in the region as well as in the World should condemn the U.S.-backed counterrevolutionary coup and express solidarity with the progressive people in Bolivia. We are definite that the heroic progressive forces in Bolivia and in Latin America would strengthen the Latin American left and develop cohesion among progressive forces in favor of independence, sovereignty and social justice.

While condemning the sinister move of the US imperialism and its lackeys in Latin America, we of the JVP, as the largest and eh most active left political party in Sri Lanka, extend our solidarity with the heroic progressive and left forces in Bolivia.
