Only the Parliamentarians of the JVP engage in righteous politics in the country says Prof. Liyanage Amarakeerthi of the Department of Sinhala in Peradeniya University.
He made this observation making the invited speech at the National Convention of the candidates who contest the LG election from the JVP that was held at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday (17th).
Speaking further Prof. Liyanage Amarakeerthi said, “I’m happy that I am able to participate on this occasion as a university teacher, a writer and a social activist. Though I participate here as a speaker and am a speaker professionally, I have to speak before several speakers of the JVP who are better speakers than I am. They do not shriek out communalism or religious extremism. They put before the masses their views logically. However, their logical views have not received the due response from the public.
The people in the country took an important decision on 8th January 2015. As a person who contributed to this decision as a person who campaigned for this decision, I’m glad to have been able to participate here as a well-wisher. It is only the JVP that could make the decision taken by the people on 8th January 2015 an ideal. The decision to make the decision taken on 8th January fruitful to the country should have taken at the general election held on 17th August 2015. At that time I personally invited masses to elect ten or fifteen MPs from the JVP to Parliament. But this request was not granted.
Only the Parliamentarians of the JVP engage in righteous politics in the country. If there more such MPs in Parliament they could have done more work for the masses. Everyone accepts that the votes of the people could be made fruitful only by the MPs elected to parliament from the JVP. As university academicians, we teach university students history. We also write about history. It is for the intellectuals of the middle class. However, the creators of history are the members of the JVP and we, as those who write history, have a responsibility to join hands with the creators of history. It is a responsibility as it is the JVP that dedicates itself for the good of the people in the country.
As a result, middle-class intellectuals have been merging with the JVP during the last two decades. Also, the JVP has a special responsibility of building the power base in the village.
Despite the change on 8th January 2015, it is obvious fraudsters and the corrupt would not be penalized. However, people expected that the new government would respect human values and would have a place for refinement. The rulers had the responsibility of giving a decent death certificate to Thajudeen, investigate the atrocities committed against journalists such as Poddala Jayantha and punish the perpetrators. However, the voter has not been given the opportunity to be satisfied with their votes. We still have this slogan alive and only the JVP would be able to fulfil this. Let’s begin the politics of humanity and refinement from the village.
The lists of nominations of other parties have given opportunities for sons, daughters and relatives of thieves, fraudsters and the corrupt. It is only the lists forwarded by the JVP that contain honest Sri Lankan citizens.
At the forthcoming local government election, the JVP has the responsibility of satisfying the conscience of the civilized citizens in this country. Today they have commenced this journey. I wish success, strength and courage to the JVP to go on this journey that would bring human values and decency to the masses in this country.”
