“The two camps that have ruled the country for the last 71 years would never develop the country even if they are given power for the next hundred years. They are only capable of dragging the country towards destruction. Hence, the people in this country should withdraw from the two camps and take a decision at the forthcoming presidential election to hand over the country to a new camp that is capable of building the country,” said the candidate of the NPP and Leader of the JVP Comrade Anura Dissanayake addressing a rally held at Ambalantota.
He said, “A few days ago 240 kilograms of heroin was seized. Normally, a kilo of heroin is worth Rs. 10 million. It means heroin seized is worth Rs. 2400 million. Is there anyone at Ambalangoda who could do business worth Rs.2400 million? Who does such business? The ordinary folk in villages and our town do not do such rackets. The police show stocks of heroin seized by them. Have you seen any person who brings heroin to the country being arrested? They never get caught. Why? It is the powerful and the rich who brings heroin to the country. Those who go to prison for heroin-related offences are those simple folk in the villages who are addicted to heroin. It is because the legal process does not function properly. The NPP will build an administration that will get the legal system to function properly. The main reason for the escalation of crime in the country is the failure to carry out the legal process justifiably.
We go to the North and the East without any agents. Rajapaksas have to go those areas with the support of the likes of Hizbullah, Pilleyan and Karuna. Sajith has to go to the North and the East with the support of the likes of Hakeem and Amir Aly. The only political movement that could go to the North and the East without the support of extremists is the NPP. Sajith goes to the North with his hands around Sambanthan. Without such support, they cannot go to the North. Gotabhaya goes to the North on the shoulders of Varadaraja Perumal, who raised the eelam flag, brought down the national flag and declared a separate state. As such, both these parties have been forced to get the support of any extremist. The only political movement that need not get the support of extremists is the NPP. We went to the East. Extremist politicians warned us not to come to Kanthankudy. We went there twice. Our rally at Kanthankudy, Kalmunai, Akkarapaththu, Kinniya, Mutur, Ottamawadi, Batticaloa areas were our most successful rallies. We addressed the masses in these rallies without the support of any extremist. For, the NPP is the only force that has been built to accommodate people from the North, the East, the estate sector, and the people in the South. Bringing all communities under one flag and one roof means we have defeated extremism. We have already achieved a political victory against extremism within the election campaign. The public security and national unity could be established in the country only by those who defeat extremism.
Poverty is not only a lack of money. According to a report, there are, in our country, 3.5 million children under the age of 14. Out of these 3.5 million children, 450000 are children from low-income families. Out of the children from low-income families, 70% are from villages. It is a huge social issue. The statistics show that the tendency of poor children leaving school before the G.C.E. (O/L) is eight times that of children from affluent families. Poverty brings sickness, accelerates old age and brings an early death. The poor children get isolated in the classroom. At the police station, the poor are intimidated, and they find it difficult to get work done at the government offices.
We build governments to eradicate poverty. However, what happened in our country? The poverty was traded. Sirimawo, JR, Premadasa, Chandrika, Mahinda, Ranil, Maithri and Sajith traded poverty on their election stages. They are still doing that. A glass of milk for the child, a bucket of sustenance for the pregnant are offered. They sell the poverty of the people. Give us power, and we will build an economy that will eradicate poverty. We too are poor. As such, we have a genuine interest in eradicating poverty from the country. Let us all poor masses get together and build our own administration. We would be able to eradicate poverty from our country within the next five or six years. Our is the only political movement that has a scientific programme to eradicate poverty. We invite all to vote for the ‘compass’ on the 16th and bring victory to the NPP to make this country a prosperous land.”
