Ms Wijayakala Maheshwaran, Member of Parliament, has no right to make a statement that supports separatism and she should apologize to the whole society for making such a statement says the Information Secretary of the JVP Comrade Vijitha Herath.
He said this at a press conference held at Parliamentary Complex yesterday (3rd) regarding the statement made by the State Minister of Child Affairs Vijayakala Maheshwaran at a Presidential Mobile Service held at Weerasingham Hall in Jaffna on the 2nd of this month. Members of the Political Bureau of the JVP Comrade Bimal Rathnayaka, MP and Comrade Sunil Handunneththi, MP too were present.
Speaking further Comrade Vijitha Herath said, “The JVP condemns the statement made by Ms Vijayakala Maheshwaran. It is a very serious statement. As a people’s representative, she has no right to make such a statement. All Parliamentarians have pledged not to support division of the country. She has violated the pledge. Ms Maheshwaran must apologize to the whole Nation. An inquiry should be held and action should be taken against her. We demand that the Parliamentary committee on privileges should be convened immediately and action should be taken against her. Failure to do so would be an unfavourable precedent.
She made the statement during the Presidential mobile service when two other ministers were present. The government should announce its stand on this matter. Legal action should be taken against her.”
Speaking about the turmoil that occurred in Parliament Comrade Vijitha Herath said such an incident could have been avoided if the government had taken action regarding the statement immediately.
