Thai Pongal, the day that brings a new beginning to the daily and professional lives of Hindu devotees is celebrated today. According to the Hindu calendar, the New Year begins today. We like to add our wishes to all Hindu devotees in Sri Lanka who wish for a new beginning and resolve to make the year a better one.
As a final result of 70 years of politics without foresight that has ruled our country, we have been forced to live in a country where social triumphs are few and far between. The approaching new year could be seen as an extension of the same issues confronted during the past year. However, the new year brings new hopes of making new beginnings and overcoming the challenges that have not been vanquished before. Also, the new year has brought us new opportunities to overcome the issues we have been socially tormented. Making this new year auspicious personally, socially as well as for the country is not an arduous target if we could think deep, take correct decisions, dedicate ourselves and act with determination. The Thai Pongal Day that has dawned in an election year could be conscientiously made an omen that would turn the lives of the people and the country towards a new direction away from the traditional path that has been followed throughout. Especially, we are confronted with the challenges of defeating the attempts by fraudsters to grab power by spreading communalism and the move by the conspirators to bury democracy in the country. As such, we also have the responsibility of setting up a strong administration with democratic principles to replace the existing constitutional dictatorship. The Thai Pongal Day in 2019 has given the Hindu devotees a valuable message through the failure of the administrations that ruled and are ruling this country but never honestly attempted to establish a Sri Lankan society with democracy, equality, brotherhood and unity to think anew and begin a new life. We, as the JVP, wish strength and determination to Hindu devotees as well as all Sri Lankans who are prepared to embark on a new journey in this New Year.
We also take this opportunity to invite Hindu devotees in Sri Lanka to organize themselves, rally with other communities and struggle together to win a Rational Land, a Just Society and a Liberated Human Being.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.
