“Our people should be made a dignified society in the world. This country could be made an unwavering country in the world. This could be done only by rallying all people for this struggle. This is a struggle that we could win. Everybody here should be a messenger who takes this message to the villages. We invite you to be the messengers of peace and prosperity,” said the candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP), the Leader of the JVP Comrade Anura Dissanayaka at the mammoth rally held by the NPP at Galle Face yesterday (18th).
At the rally attended by more than a hundred thousand people from all over the country, Comrade Anura Kumara Dissanayaka was announced as the presidential candidate of the NPP.
Speaking further Comrade Anura Dissanayaka said, “I have been chosen as the candidate for the NPP at the forthcoming presidential election. I pledge that the trust the NPP and the people in this country have in me would never be broken.
I was born in a small village near Thambuththegama and have been engaged in politics since by student days and for thirty years. In politics, we have been confronted with retreats as well as challenges. The struggle we start today based on experiences of people in faraway villages, as well as people from all positions, would be carried on until victory.
This selection is held at a very decisive juncture of our country. One path leads to the outdated and destructive path the country has been dragged on for 71 years. The other is the path full of happiness, prosperity and peace. We invite all people to select the path for prosperity. This is the center for all unblemished politicians who love the country, the intellectuals who build the country and the working masses who direct the country. It is the National People’s Power that leads the country along this new path.
Currently, politics in our country has been grabbed by a disgustful, vicious circle. This is the state that has made society averse to politics. We pledge that this political battlefield would be cleaned up. The country should be directed on a new economic path. We promise that a production economy would be created and avenues would be created to flow its gains to the society including the farmers, fisherfolk and the working masses.
A large number of people in society have been made distressed due to various reasons. They are tormented due to communal, caste and gender matters. We pledge that all sorts of injustice and unfairness would be wiped out and all would be treated as the stakeholder of a great human society.
There is a dialogue in eh society regarding public security. Today, police posts have been put up near schools, hospitals and boundaries of certain villages. No communalist or an extremist can remove those guard posts. All they could do is to increase the number of such posts. The public’s safety can be guaranteed only by strengthening the acceptance for all communities with peace and reconciliation. All measures would be taken to eradicate mistrust and fear and build a country with national unity.
The human society developed as independent views gained ground after struggles. Human views cannot be trapped in safes. We pledge that a democratic environment would be created for such independent views to be osculated. We would abolish the executive presidency and strengthen the political structure to give powers to Parliament.
We had an environmental system that contained large biodiversity that was distributed throughout the country. This society that pursues profit is destroying this environment. This country has become a place where fruit cannot be eaten without any misgiving. It has become a dumping ground for garbage in the world. We would come forward to create a state where a child could eat fruit without poison, drink fresh clean water and breathe fresh air.
We have to establish a country where the gains of development are enjoyed by the people. We have to create a society where the children get a beautiful future, the youths get benefits according to their ability and the elders get security. We have such a dream.
Once Martin Luther King, the American black leader, said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” Many laments this tragedy. However, if we do not change there wouldn’t be any gain. Hundred of thousands of people have come here today to give us strength and encouragement. We pledge that we would create a future the people in our country would not regret.
The people in our country should be made a dignified human society in the world. This country should be made an unwavering state in the world. This could be done only by rallying all people for this struggle. This is a struggle that we can win. We invite everyone here to be a messenger who takes this message to the villages and towns.”
