“All the other parties distribute bags of cement, roofing sheets, boxes of matches etc. The only article they have not distributed as bribes to get votes are coffins. We, of the JVP, do not distribute goods. We distribute ideas to make the people knowledgeable. The distributed goods get defunct after some time. However, the ideas we distribute remain in the hearts of the masses forever. The people should be rallied to build the society not by distributing goods but by ideas, ideologies, policies and example. We want to create an administration that is responsible for the masses. Let’s make this election that takes the initiative to build such a government. We’ll prepare the whole country to achieve this. Let’s make this election one that ends the 70 years of vicious, roguish politics and create an administration that develops the village and the town to defeat fraud, waste and corruption. For this, the existing miserable political system should be defeated forever. Let’s make this election that would bring a massive victory to the JVP,” said the General Secretary of the JVP Tilvin Silva addressing the National Convention participated by all the candidates who contest the LG election from the JVP held at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium today (17th).
Among the invited guests at the Convention were university professors and lecturers, doctors, artists, entrepreneurs, trade union leaders and leaders from civic organizations.
Here are excerpts from Comrade Tilvin Silva’s speech: “We all know that the local government election has been delayed for more than two years. We carried out a massive struggle to get the election held without the preferential system, under a new system that would elect a Member who is responsible for the ward and that would give a bigger representation for the women folk who consist of 51% of the population. We, of the JVP, like all other times, have initiated a principled politics to change the existing vicious politics. The candidates who are gathered here today are those who would build the conscientious and humanitarian political culture in this country.
Those who are in the two parties that have ruled this country ask the people to vote for them so that they could have a good income for four years. Despite the allowance being small, they could use the power to earn massive assets.
We advertised in the papers and invited honest, who are against fraud and corruption and are willing to work voluntarily without expecting any monetary or other privileges to contest the election from the JVP. At this Convention, all the candidates made this pledge.
We are holding this Convention in a triumphant environment after entering candidates for local government bodies throughout the country. This is the first time candidates from our party have been put forward to contest local councils in Jaffna, Killinochchi and Mullaithivu districts. It is a massive victory for the JVP. The country needs the dignified political culture of our party. It is you all who have to make this victorious in the country. All these days it is the ruling party that prepared to election map of the country. Comrade Anura Dissanayaka and our comrade parliamentarians were able to win this election process that is favourable to the masses of this country. Mr. Maithripala Sirisena comes to the election like taking dogs to be bathed. Petitions were filed in a bid to get the election postponed. Once these petitions were withdrawn Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s group filed petitions in a different way. The UNP too wanted the election to be postponed. All these attempts have been defeated.
The only party that faces the election with confidence is the JVP. We confront the election under a new system, which was the request of the people, which doesn’t have the preferential war but elects a Member who is responsible for the ward. The system would have 25% women representation that makes women folk actively participate in the electoral process. The election that was won after defeating conspiracies to postpone the election would be advantageous for the people only if a large number of JVP Members are elected to the local bodies. This is the main challenge before us. The local government councils that have become dens of corruption, joints for racketeers and fraudsters should be made people friendly institutions. The vicious politics spread throughout the island during the last 70 years and specially after 1977. The politician should be made a people friendly, honest dedicated people’s servant. Local government councils are the best place to initiate this process.
A large number of activists who had functioned under the UNP and SLFP have become candidates of the JVP. They have come knowing they would have to come up with a lot of difficulties, make sacrifices, to work without any monetary gains and expecting vituperations. They all go to the village and the town as candidates having a programme to build the village and the town.
We have to defeat the enemy not only in numbers but also politically. We could defeat them politically only by being good examples to the society, by sacrifice, dedication and enduring difficulties. We should sacrifice personal luxuries for the common good of the masses. The JVP is a political party that has been build with sacrifice.”
