“We fight for a civilized political culture instead of the obscene political culture that exists in the country,” says the candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) JVP Leader Comrade Anura Dissanayaka.
He said this speaking at the summit of Local Government Councilors of the JVP named ‘Village & neighbourhood to Colombo’ held at New Town Hall in Colombo yesterday (1st).
Speaking further Comrade Anura Dissanayaka said, “A presidential election is to be held before the end of this year. Various parties are conspiring to get the presidential election postponed. Whatever conspiracies are hatched the presidential election will be held before the end of this year. One and a half years have gone by since the election for local government councils were held. The value and dignity of the votes cast for JVP candidates at that election have been protected by our councillors. We face future elections as people who have given value and dignity for people’s votes.
Parliament is one place where national politics is represented. In Parliamentary affairs, we are at the forefront. In May Day celebrations we exceed other political parties. In TV debates our comrades’ presentation of facts cannot be matched by representatives of other parties. Also, the rally we held at Galle Face on 18th August to introduce the presidential candidate of the NPP will not be able to be matched by any other party. Despite we are above other in all national events, our problem is we have not been able to achieve the same type of victories at the village level.
How do we win the village? A major role has to be carried out by our local government councillors. If we could transform the village we could achieve political victories. We already have a good political dialogue with our members, sympathizers and supporters. However, this is not adequate. We should go beyond that and have a good political dialogue with the members of other political parties. Without such a dialogue we would not be able to develop this country. When the member of the UNP cast his vote for the UNP he never expected the party stalwarts to get involved in Central Bank scam, levy heavy taxes on masses and trap the country in a debt snare. Members of the UNP too expect the country to be developed, enhance the authority of law and order, get jobs for youths and develop education and health sectors. However, the expectations of the UNP members and their leaders don’t agree. The members of the camp Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa represents is good governance. Here also the expectations of the members and their leaders are contradictory. Could these leaders genuinely have a dialogue on civilized politics?
It is you, the councillors from the JVP and we of the JVP who could take the flag of civilized politics and of incorrupt politics to the village. Only we could take the dialogue of how to end black politics and stabilize white politics to the country. Many who are sensitive regarding the affairs of the country and the destruction caused to this country by 71 years of misrule are angry about it. They have a healthy hope of a political power that would and could build the country. The country needs a programme that builds the country and stabilizes the future of the masses. The country needs a new economic programme instead of the existing crawling economy. A programme to build a righteous society instead of the existing corrupt society is necessary.
A system that spends large sums of money for education, health and transport has been created. The patient is a burden for the house. The vehicle bought has become a burden. A large amount of money earned has to be spent on education, transport and health of the family. Hence, a massive transformation era is necessary for our country. It is necessary to take our country to the world through innovation and new inventions. A strong economy is necessary to stand with the world. You are going to the village and address them with such a programme. Our programme includes developing an environment congenial to the country, a modern transport service, development of agriculture, fisheries, livestock where the producer and the consumer are satisfied. The programme you take to the village is one that would make our country a prosperous country in the world where people could lead contented lives.
We have to build power to implement such a programme. This country could be developed only with an incorrupt political culture, professionals and working masses with abilities and talents that are prepared to dedicate themselves. The NPP has been build with such forces. This is the great quality of the NPP. With such heavy arms of the NPP, no other political party can compete. Now the country has to be handed over to a force that could develop the country. We have already started our presidential campaign. As the founder of our party Comrade Rohana Wijeweera instructed us we have awakened early and have begun our task.”
Members of the Political Bureau Comrade Vijitha Herath and Comrade Sunil Handunneththi, Central Committee Members Comrade Samanmalee Gunasinghe, Comrade Nalinda Jayatissa and Comrade Lakshman Nipunarachchi and a large number of local government councillors were present.
