“We all have a prior understanding of what would happen in eh country after the election campaign. On which direction the country would move economically? What threats would democracy confront? It is clearly seen that instead of developing unity among the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims, the country would be lead towards heightening suspicion, mistrust and conflicts among these communities. As such, we pledge that we would unreservedly struggle for the protection of the people and their rights. We would like to proclaim to the people that we would unhesitatingly come forward on behalf of the people in this country,” said the candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) and Leader of the JVP Anura Dissanayake.
He said this speaking at a press conference held by the NPP at Avakasha Center at Battaramulla yesterday (18th).
Organizations and political parties attached to NPP including Dr Nihal Abeysinghe,- General Secretary of NPP, its media spokesman Attorney at Law Harshana Nanayakkara, Attorney at Law Lal Wijenayaka – General Secretary of United Left Front, Renowned Writer Jayatilleke Kammallaweeera, Mr Wasantha Dissanayaka of Revolutionary Socialist Center, Mr Sudantha Madhawa of New Generation, Dr Michael Fernando – Senior Lecturer, International Relations – Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, Mr Thiyagaraja Waradas – lecturer at the Colombo University of Colombo and Member of Sama Abhimani Samuhikaya, Dr Hiniduma Senevi – Senior Lecturer and Renowned Writer Keerthy Welisarage were present.
Speaking further Comrade Anura Dissanayake said, “We entered the presidential election as the NPP. A large number of groups that have never got onto political stages in Sri Lanka contributed to us. University professors and lecturers, lawyers, writers, artists, social activists and many others joined our election campaign. We had an expected target. We fully knew the difficulties and hazards of the election campaign when two main camps had entered the fray.
We entered the fray, expecting a certain result. The result we expected is not among the election results. In election campaigns in Sri Lanka, we have seen stages full of clowns and jesters. However, even in such a situation, we were able to build a dialogue regarding the difficulties in developing the country, the issues confronted by the people and the path we should take to find solutions for such issues. Whatever the result is we believe the path the people in this country have to take is the one that we have pointed out to them. We believe the only path that could strengthen democracy, create a healthy culture, build harmony among the Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslims, confirm the security of all people and the country is the one that was shown by the NPP.
Also, we all have a prior understanding of what would happen in eh country after the election campaign. On which direction, the country would move economically? What threats would democracy confront? It is clearly seen that instead of developing unity among the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims, the country would be lead towards heightening suspicion, mistrust and conflicts among these communities. As such, we pledge that we would unreservedly struggle for the protection of the people and their rights. We want to proclaim to the people that we would unhesitatingly come forward on behalf of the people in this country. For the policies followed by the rulers for 71 years show us where the country has been pushed to and where such policies could take the country towards. The dialogue that exists in the country indicates the threat that confronts democracy. What is obvious, after the election, is that a situation has developed where suspicion and mistrust between the Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim people will grow.
As such, it is evident that the politics, the path we have shown would be the only path the country and people could take. Hence, We would like to state that we would unhesitatingly struggle to get the people on the correct path the people should take and would always be prepared to represent the rights of the people.
We were able to build a broad force within the election campaign. We have created a political force that consists of political parties, civil society organizations, civil activists, artists, writers, professionals, intellectuals and many others. I believe that the individuals in this political force would never expect anything personally but have rallied with the genuine interest of salvaging the country and saving the people from the deepest precipice they have been pushed to. All these activists gave their best to the campaign. I want to thank them especially for their contribution in taking the campaign successfully forward. They went from village to village, meeting citizens and carrying our message to them. They performed a massive task. As eh NPP we thank them all.
There was a sharp division within the election campaign. It could be seen in the election result as well. One group made communalism their base, pretended they are the foremost in the security in the country to spread their ideology. It is what the result in the South indicates. Also, the people in the North and the East understood this political development as a threat to them as a society. They seem to have taken a political decision as a society to confront this situation. The election result indicates it. Even in such a sharp division, more than 400,000 people have expressed their confidence in us. We thank all of them. We assure them that we would definitely give value and also protect the dignity of their votes.
We would also like to remind the people in this country that we have experienced divisions, retreats and chaotic situations in politics. However, in all such instances we, with courage and determination, have paved the correct path and would like to proclaim to the people in this country that we would never give up the responsibility of liberating the country from the challenges the country and the people are confronted with.
