A special meeting took place yesterday afternoon (31) at the JVP Head Office in Pelawatte between the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, H.E. Wei Huaxiang, and the General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Comrade Tilvin Silva.
\nAmbassador Huaxiang, who presented his credentials on August 25, expressed his deep appreciation for the warm welcome extended to him by the Sri Lankan people since his arrival.<\/p>\n

He noted that he felt completely at home in Sri Lanka and expressed his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations during his tenure.<\/p>\n

The discussion highlighted the long-standing friendship between Sri Lanka and China, noting the upcoming 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, as well as the 75th anniversary of the historic 1952 Rubber-Rice Pact.<\/p>\n

Key focus was given to the anti-corruption initiatives implemented under the new government and the \u2018Praja Shakthi\u2019 program aimed at eradicating rural poverty. The two parties exchanged views on how Sri Lanka could draw upon China\u2019s extensive experience and success in poverty alleviation.<\/p>\n

The Ambassador emphasized that China engages with other nations on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and shared development. He added that he will actively encourage more Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

Sharing a personal touch, Ambassador Huaxiang reflected on how the development path forged under the leadership of the Communist Party of China enabled someone from a remote rural background like himself to rise to the position of a diplomat.<\/p>\n

Both sides agreed to continue strengthening the warm diplomatic relations and mutual cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The Chinese delegation included Counselors Mei Jing and Qin Ligong of the Political Section, along with Third Secretary Jin Enze. Representing the JVP, Attorney-at-Law Comrade Kalpana Madhubhashini of the International Affairs Committee was also present.<\/p>\n
