By giving a state minister position to a person who shot and killed an active member of his party, President Ranil Wickremesinghe is showing that it is not the UNP that he is protecting but the flower bud, says the General Secretary of the JVP Comrade Tilvin Silva.
He expressed these views while participating in forming the Divisional Council of National People’s Power (NPP) held in Badulla.
He said, “The village people now realize that the rotation politics of 74 years carried out by blue and green parties is futile. They are gradually gathering around the national people’s force today. While we are going from village to village to form divisional councils of the NPP, the politicians of Pohottuwa party are scared to come to the village. They are now in Colombo. A situation has arisen where ministers like Nimal Siripala cannot even come to a funeral in Badulla. We heard that the people paid a different kind of offering to one who got a state minister post from this government.
No matter what games Ranil Wickramasinghe plays, the next government will be formed by the NPP after winning the next election. It is definite, it cannot be changed. What we are doing now is strengthening this process.
Now there is a big crisis in this country. We are making plans to get out of this disaster and this difficulty. The people of this country took to the streets and carried out a huge protest against the government because they could not bear the suffering. Unfortunately, this protest movement did not have the leadership of a political party with the correct ideology and practice. We know that the farmers of this country were the first to take to the streets a year ago. You may remember that Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa tried to make the cultivation of this country organic overnight. Agriculture collapsed when chemical fertilizers were banned.
Next we remember that with a gas shortage came a gas explosion. And there was a shortage of oil. The lights were cut. Because of this, the people took to the streets and asked the government to go home. It became a big wave. Many of the 6.9 million people who voted for this government came to the streets. The country’s people removed the ruler they did not like, but they did not have the opportunity to appoint a ruler they liked.
This constitution is a distortion. One hundred and thirty-four members of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s group joined together to make Ranil Wickramasinghe the president. There is a problem there. Isn’t that where we have the best lesson? We thought that the U.N.P. And Pohottuwa have two principles and can never get together.
But what happened? MPs from Pohottuve got together and made Ranil Wickramasinghe the president. It was because Gotabaya appointed Ranil the Prime Minister, and when Gota went, he became the Acting President.
Did the people who voted for Pohottuwa vote in favour of Ranil? Why was Nimal Siripala elected? They elected him against the UNP, didn’t they? At that time, they said that Ranil Wickramasinghe was a thief, had defrauded the Central Bank, was selling the country and was betraying it. There is a lesson for us to learn from this. They were falsely divided, and now we understand that they are actually in one group.
Does anyone think that this crisis will be resolved after a few days? They wouldn’t solve it. It will get more difficult. Why do they attack demonstrations? The reason is that the Rajapaksas are angry with the agitators. So Ranil Wickramasinghe wants to make Rajapaksas happy by beating the protestors.
Our crisis is debt. Ranil’s answer to that is another debt. Now the countries do not give loans to Sri Lanka. Therefore, he is going to take a loan from the IMF. They have also proposed 2.9 billion dollars for four years. It is also given in six-month instalments.
We can’t even bring the oil we need for a month by taking it. Therefore, going after the IMF is not the solution to this problem. There are conditions attached to it. What is the condition? To raise taxes. Now Ranil Wickramasinghe is doing it.
As such, we cannot live with the crisis unless we solve the crisis within this country. As soon as an election is near and someone comes and gives something at that time, we are likely to forget this whole story. For 74 years, the two blue-green parties came to power in the rotating system because most people forgot the past. But this time, there is no way to forget like that. Now, the country is bankrupt. The country has seen the blue-green lie. Let us all work together to build a government of the NPP by taking intelligent decisions.”
