Condolence Message of JVP Sri Lanka regarding the victims of the unprecedented earthquake
in Turkey
First, we would like to extend our profound grief towards the people of Turkey and to grieve
families who lost their loved ones due to the unprecedented earthquake that hit your country.
According to the latest news, more than 5100 deaths have been confirmed, but rescue teams fear
the death toll may increase after a powerful magnitude 7.8 and 7.7 earthquakes rocked Turkey and
Syria early yesterday (6th). The earthquake has caused extensive damage to thousands of
buildings in the area, and rescue workers, who face bitterly cold winter temperatures, as well as
electricity and water outages and the terror of continuing aftershocks, have been searching the
rubble of buildings for survivors and it is feared that thousands of people in both countries would
be affected.
As the people in a country badly affected by the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004, which
caused more than 44000 lives, we can feel the tragedy and hardships people are facing now and
will soon. As an organization seeking solidarity & harmony among all people, we appreciate not
only the people of Turkey but many countries that have come forward to provide humanitarian
emergency aid to earthquake-struck areas. We take this opportunity to thank the people of
Turkey again for their steadfast support and solidarity extended during the Tsunami tragedy.
Many countries declaring to come to the assistance of the affected indicates the strong
humanitarian bond that lies underneath various power forces that attempt to disrupt the
humanitarian accord among the people. While expressing our condolences to the
grieving families, speedy recovery for the injured and expeditious normalcy in the regions, we
wish all the strength and courage to the people of Turkey to muster their forces to take on any
catastrophe, whether natural or manufactured.
