Charles’ resignation doubtful – Anura Dissanayake

January 28, 2023 Nihal Weerasuriya

An immediate investigation should be initiated through the Constituent Assembly of the Parliament to find out whether there was a conspiratorial plan behind the resignation of the member of the Election Commission, PSM Charles at a time when an election has been announced, and there is a conspiracy by the government to postpone the general election said the leader of the NPP and JVP Comrade Anura Dissanayake. He further said, “Especially the main duty assigned to the Election Commission is to conduct elections. Elections are not held every month or every year. They get all privileges from public money. Also, the commission was established with the aim of changing the partisanship that existed in this institution for a period of time in our politics. No matter what political objective or bias those who are appointed by it have, they must be responsible for the great hopes for the independence of these institutions of our people. For that, people with some experience in government and other fields are appointed to commissions with confidence. But the behaviour of some members of the Election Commission seems to be subservient to some political objectives rather than working for responsibility and accountability for the people. The actions of Mrs Charles, who recently resigned from the commission, are also completely suspicious. Her resignation at a time when an election has been announced, and the government is conspiring to postpone the election is a cause for serious suspicion. Therefore, we request that an immediate investigation be conducted through the Constitutional Council of the Parliament.”
