Declare emergency to expedite relief work – JVP

May 19, 2016 Nihal Weerasuriya

JVP asked the government to declare a state of emergency in the country to expedite the process of providing relief to disaster hit areas.
Information Secretary of the JVP Parliamentarian Herath said in parliament that bureaucratic hurdles, administrative and financial regulations and circulars had prevented authorities from providing immediate relief to people affected by floods, landslides and earth slips and declaring a state of emergency would facilitate relief work that needs to be carried out immediately.
Comrade Vijitha Herath said people in many parts of the island have been affected and in some areas whole villages are cut away from the rest of eh country, people are marooned and many have been forced to confine to their houses.
As authorities are bound by circulars and regulations the relief work doesn’t move in a speed that is necessary. Hence declaring a state of emergency would unbind the officials from bureaucratic hurdles and would release them to take action immediately.
The Leader of the House and Minister 0f Higher Education and Highways Lakshaman Kiriella said they would consider the proposal by Comrade Vijitha Herath.
