The JVP has proposed to the government that a single electoral system should be used for provincial, local government and Parliamentary elections and it should be included in the proposed new constitution.
This was disclosed at a discussion JVP Leaders had with the Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Faiszer Musthapha on the 10th.
The Leader of the JVP Comrade Anura Dissanayaka and the Member of the Political Bureau Comrade Lal Kantha have participated on behalf of the JVP.
Their party rejects the proposed new electoral system as it doesn’t properly address the wishes of the people and they oppose the 5% restriction proposed for the electoral system Comrade Anura Dissanayaka has said. The JVP Leaders have objected to the proposed 5% ratio proposed by Local Government Act and they have pointed out that the percentage ratio proposed to elect members through proportionate and first past the post system would not confirm the democratic right of the masses.
They have asked the government to introduce the new constitution with a new electoral system and until this is done to hold the local government election that is long overdue.
Minister Faiszer Musthapha has said the suggestions put forward by JVP Leaders would be presented to the cabinet.
